Bee

Encountered this bee perched atop a flower while at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve.

Same photo, but closer crop.

There’s a distracting blade of grass that is running through the flower, but I wasn’t about to disturb the bee just to get that out of the frame.

Pelican

Nikon D800, AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, ISO 125, 300mm, f/5.6, 1/1000

Got lucky when a pelican flew nearly overhead.

Nikon D800, AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, ISO 180, 135mm, f/5.6, 1/800

Most of the time, the pelican patrols skimmed along the the surf looking for the catch of the day.

Big Dipper

Nikon D800, AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED, ISO 100, 26 mm, f/2.8, 24.6

I went camping out at Half Moon Bay. During the first night, the skies were clear so I had some time to experiment. From a past trip, I learned that high ISOs lead to noisy images–not when you look on the back of the camera, but when you get home and view the enlarged photo on the computer. So, I set the ISO to 100 and used the remote to trigger the shutter. I should have taken more photos, but I didn’t pack a second battery. I decided to save some juice for the second night, which ended up being overcast.

Photographing Fireworks

Nikon D800, AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.8G ED VR, ISO 100, 300 mm, f/6.3, 9.1.

I can’t help but think that a bit of luck is involved in photographing fireworks. The pace of the fireworks show was a bit uneven. I was shooting in manual mode with a tripod and remote, with the shutter set to bulb.

Nikon D800, AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm, f/3.5-5-8G ED VR, ISO 100, 300 mm, f/6.3, 8.5.

As soon as one display faded, I closed the shutter and re-opened it. If I was lucky, I would capture the next set. However, sometime, quite a few seconds would elapse. Do I continue leaving the shutter open? Then, I would spot another fireworks show off to the right and by the time I had the camera pointed in the correct direction, the one on the left would resume.

Redwood City July 4th Fireworks

Nikon D800, AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, ISO 100, 300 mm, f/5.6, 4.0.

Decided to photograph fireworks for the first time last night. From Cañada College, I had a clear view of the Redwood City July 4th fireworks show. I could also see the Shoreline Amphitheatre fireworks show, as well as some across the bay.

Seagull

Nikon D800, AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, ISO 250, 300 mm, f/5.6, 1/2000

Last time, I discovered that 1/200 is not fast enough to freeze a bird in flight and ended up with a bunch of blurry bird photos. 1/2000 seems to do the job; however, unlike the beach where seagulls are plentiful, the July 4th festival was a bit sub-optimal numbers wise. However, these birds did not seem to be spooked off by the masses or the live band.

In an open field, it was hard getting the bird in the right angle. The flights patterns were a bit random. Also, I was really reliant on that autofocus to be spot on.

Full Moon

Nikon D800, AF-S Nikkor 28-300 mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR, ISO 100, 300 mm, f/11, 1/250

Another test shot of tonight’s full moon. This time, on tripod, manual focus while using magnified live view, mirror up, and the MC-30 remote cord. I think this is the best of the three.
